About this test

Why endotoxin data matters in the lab

Endotoxins are fragments of Gram-negative bacterial cell walls. Even small amounts can interfere with cell-based assays, so many labs check endotoxin levels before using a material in culture.

The LAL assay, described in USP chapter <85>, detects endotoxin by its reaction with an enzyme cascade from horseshoe crab blood cells. Results are reported in endotoxin units (EU) per milligram. A report shows the method (gel-clot, turbidimetric or chromogenic), the result and the laboratory.
